Jan Pekelder: Subject scrambling in the middle field. The case of modern Dutch
Abstract
In Dutch the nominal subject usually precedes the nominal direct object if both are placed in the middle field, i.e. between the finite verb and the position of the final verb(s). Nonetheless, some types of violations of this general tendency are reported in the literature. In this contribution, we shall focus on utterances with the verb overvallen (to overcome) which may trigger a direct object-subject order.

Dan Faltýnek: Comments on the theories of case and its definition
Abstract
In The paper is divided into two parts. In the first part, I evaluate the ways in which cas is explained in several grammars of the Czech language, finding them inconsistent, whereas the usage of the term “case” often fails to correspond to its previously established definition. I consider case to be a sign, and attempt to demonstrate that some of the grammars do not respect this. In the second part, I propose a new model of case which should hopefully be useful for newly created grammars: consistent, exhaustive and elegant.

Petra Martinková: Thematic progressions in Czech linguistics and abroad
Abstract
This contribution deals with researches within the field of thematic progressions (henceforth TP). The focus of this work lies in historical-methodological summary of contributions dealing with Daneš’s framework of TP (1968 in Czech, 1974 in English, 1976 in German) and also with similar framework for analysis of thematic development. Journal articles, contributions in proceedings as well as monographs, published in the Czech Republic and abroad are commented upon. Attention is paid to selected dissertations and diploma theses the authors of which have picked out the framework of TP as the main method of text analysis. However, it is not possible for a contribution like this to cover all works which are in some way connected with the theory of TP. This work is a mere probe into this issue and its aim is to present the influence of the framework of TP on Czech linguistics as well as linguistics abroad.

Štěpán Sedláček: Ideology and (Barthesian) myth in popular-culture texts
Abstract
The presented text is a methodological essay concerning semiotic investigation of popular-culture texts. It builds theoretically on the concepts of ideology (as defined by Teun A. van Dijk) and myth (as defined by Roland Barthes). The combination of the aforementioned concepts of semiotic research results in the proposed synthetic method of ideologically-mythological analysis, suited for interpretation of texts of popular culture and decryption of re-production of ideological distortions encoded in their contents.
